Common Sense Jesus?

Some fun in light of a recent politician’s statement about Jesus:

“For over 2,000 years the world has tried hard to erase the memory of the perfect conservative, and His principles of compassion, caring and common sense.”

What do you think?  Did Jesus have an uncommon amount of common sense?

I tend to agree with this blogger:

I’m pretty sure Jesus’s principles were anything but common sense. In fact, in my recollection, they were the complete opposite. The story of the Gospel is Jesus openly challenging the prevailing norms, social structures, and power dynamics of his day and turning them on their heads with a radical message of humility, non-violence, selflessness and faith in the seemingly impossible.


But what do I know?  I have been accused of lacking common sense myself.

Knowing God

Today it seems that two (among many) of the various struggles that churches across the denominational spectrum have are: 1) how to reach young people; and 2) how to maintain a particular theological and denominational identity in a world that is increasingly pluralistic and post-denominational, and decreasingly concerned about theological particularities. Perhaps it comes down to a question of ‘knowing’. What does it mean to ‘know God’? Is it primarily being aware of the historical and theological distinctions of a particular tradition and being able to regurgitate these facts on demand? Or is it something else?

Like Water Off a Goose’s Back

So we loaded the kids, our mammoth tent, and some food (and beer!) into the van last Thursday and headed off to the hills of North Carolina. We were ready to hit the third annual Wild Goose Festival. We arrived at Hot Springs, NC to discover puddles, mud and —smiles. Hundreds of people setting up camp, giving directions, prepping stages and venues, setting up craft booths, plucking guitar strings, and more. Despite the deluge of rain the night before, and the forecasted rain (which did come), the Goose would go on.

Pub Theology Topics April 19

A nice, low-key evening at the pub last night. In the cask was the Aztec Gold, a porter with chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, and chipotle... a spicy delicious combination. What was on the sheet?

  2. Truly genius. I love it. It amazes me how people see Jesus through their own lens … and how often I do this too. I seem to have this unshakeable belief that he was a smoker … I wonder why …
