We had about a dozen people at Pub Theology last night over at Right Brain Brewery in the Warehouse district. There's nothing like coming in from the cold in Northern Michigan to a good brew and good conversation with friends and strangers!

Highlights from Funding the Missional Church

Attending a conference in Minneapolis entitled, "Funding the Missional Church" It's been inspiring, challenging and very fun. Great to meet so many people who are seeking to create unique, engaging communities of Christ followers. Here's a few highlights:

What is the Emerging Church?

Many are asking these questions and wondering what this whole emergent or emerging church thing is. It is not something to be scared of, and the reality is – you are in the midst of it, whether you know it or not. In many ways, emergents are people who are skeptical of denominations and mega-churches, are allergic to owning a church building, are interested in exploring and developing their faith in community and conversation, are eager to draw on some of the other great Christian traditions other than their own, and are interested in how art, faith and justice connect and interweave.

Emmanuel | Christmas Day

If you do not hear in the message of Christmas something that must strike some as blasphemy and others as sheer fantasy, the chances are you have not heard the message for what it is. Emmanuel is the message in a nutshell. Emmanuel, which is Hebrew for "God with us." That's where the problem lies.

Progressive Christianity

A few characteristics of Progressive Christianity: * A spiritual vitality and expressiveness, including participatory, arts-infused, and lively worship as well as a variety of spiritual rituals and practices such as meditation. * Intellectual integrity including a willingness to question. * An affirmation of human diversity. * An affirmation of the Christian faith with a simultaneous sincere respect for other faiths. * Strong ecological concerns and commitments.
