“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

Along those lines, I read this great piece from the spiritual teacher and mystic Anthony de Mello today. It seems a fitting thing to share today, a tribute to Dr. King’s vision and work. He writes in his book Awareness:

“For instance, I’m an Indian. Now, let’s suppose that I’m a prisoner of war in Pakistan, and they say to me, “Well, today we’re going to take you to the frontier, and you’re going to take a look at your country.” So they bring me to the frontier, and I look across the border, and I think, “Oh, my country, my beautiful country. I see villages and trees and hills. This is my own, my native land!” After a while one of the guards says, “Excuse me, we’ve made a mistake here. We have to move up another ten miles.” What was I reacting to? Nothing. I kept focusing on a word, India. But trees are not India; trees are trees. In fact, there are no frontiers or boundaries. They were put there by the human mind; generally by stupid, avaricious politicians. My country was one country once upon a time; it’s four now. If we don’t watch out it might be six. Then we’ll have six flags, six armies. That’s why you’ll never catch me saluting a flag. I abhor all national flags because they are idols. What are we saluting? I salute humanity, not a flag with an army around it.”

Amen. May we all rise above the narrow confines of our varied nationalistic concerns so that we care equally for the broader concerns of all humanity. Until then, per Dr. King, perhaps we aren’t really living.

Still another aspect of my own reading perspective is important to note at the outset. I am not a member of the academic guild of Bible scholars. My reading of the Bible generally, and the fourth gospel in particular, comes not out of the context of university conversation – whether secular or theological – but rather from the perspective of radical discipleship. That is, I am interested in the biblical texts not simply as objects of study and intellectual interest but as paradigmatic tales of God’s relationship to our ancestors and to us.

Saving Institutions 2

Recently Andrew Sullivan noted that "Christianity is in crisis" and encouraged readers to simply follow Jesus and leave church, institution, and organized religion behind. Forget the church. Follow Jesus. Many sympathize with this impulse, as noted in my most recent post. What, after all, do institutions have to offer us other than a slow process, outdated organization, and mired traditionalism? Diana Butler Bass, despite her critiques of the institutional church, notes that perhaps things are not as dire as Sullivan imagines.

Whose idea is it to recap a discussion on theology over beer a week later? Not a great idea. But here goes anyway. These were last week's topics, and I'll do my best to give a couple thoughts that were expressed: 1. What is your favorite part about summer? 2. How does one move forward after a tragedy? How do you explain it? 3. Is history science or art? (watch Stephen Colbert's re-enactment of Paul Revere's famous midnight ride!) 4. “Children are bad at lying for the same reason that adults are. We are born with a conscience (which is God's voice in our soul) that says it is wrong for us to bear false witness.” 5. The Declaration of Independence dogmatically bases all rights on the fact that God created all men equal; and it is right; for if they were not created equal, they were certainly evolved unequal. There is no basis for democracy except in a dogma about the divine origin of man. 6. “The point of the universe is the hallowing of God's name.”
