Look To Tomorrow

I came across this poem shortly after our move to Washington, DC. It was written by Pub Theology's favorite poet, Chuck Trafelet, whose self-published collection of poetry was discovered in our previous home in Traverse City, MI. Fitting for us at a number of levels, including (or especially) the title. Picture me reading this in a house full of boxes on a cold November evening in an unfamiliar city where we've just uprooted the entire family, wondering what in the world we've done. It was timely. Poem: ROOTS as evening once again steals across the land and midwinter cold settles in the bones here so far from home and friends beginning a new life – ending the old bones, why do you pain me so you know as well as I and better we cannot turn back now...

At some point, after a sip of a really good IPA, someone mentioned: “You know these things are all great, and we’d want to share them with our kids. But really, you have to demonstrate these ideas if you want children to learn them.”

Disarming and Ingenious

Michael Camp's review of Pub Theology Disarming and ingenious; cleverly crafted with a residual sweetness Bryan Berghoef is an author after my own heart. He loves beer… and Jesus. But not the Jesus we typically find in our traditional institutional church structures, where brutal honesty is squelched, members are spoon fed answers, and the goal is to produce clones who all believe one body of doctrine but don’t think for themselves. No, Bryan’s Christ is humble (open to listen to other perspectives, embraces religious diversity, and makes love, mutual respect, and communal exploration paramount) and his beer is good. It creates the scene for this story—the local pub—one of the best places where a faith (and no-faith) community can learn a whole new paradigm for Christ-like fellowship.

Common Sense Jesus?

Some fun in light of a recent politician's statement about Jesus as the "perfect" conservative: "For over 2,000 years the world has tried hard to erase the memory of the perfect conservative, and His principles of compassion, caring and common sense." So here we've collected some brilliant portraits of Jesus employing such 'common sense'.
